LABORATORY MANAGER
PAY RANGE: $87,433 TO $111,040
The City of Olathe's Environmental Services Division wants YOU to join our team of talented and dedicated employees that provide critical water-related services to the City of Olathe's residents. As the Environmental Laboratory Manager, you will lead your team in being a trusted partner for both internal and external customers, ensuring timely data delivery that fulfills regulatory requirements and supports data-driven decision making. The Environmental Laboratory is a community resource for water science and works to foster trust in public health and environmental integrity through its commitment to Excellence in Public Service .
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for 11 staff including a laboratory supervisor, quality assurance officer, environmental compliance manager, and a team of seven analysts. Built in 2017, the Olathe Environmental Laboratory is equipped with advanced technologies to analyze water and wastewater samples today and into the future. Our certified staff perform sampling and analysis in support of regulatory requirements conducting about 60,000 tests annually.

- Direct the overall operation of the City's Environmental Lab, lead the laboratory in providing excellent service to both internal and external customers.
- Manage analysis of environmental samples according to the requirements of the Clean Water and the Safe Drinking Water Acts. Serve as the administrative contact for KDHE's Public Water Supply Programs.
- Plan, prioritize, coach, lead, mentor and review the work of assigned staff. Model the City's Leadership Philosophy to promote a positive and inclusive work culture.
- Maintain status as a NELAP accredited laboratory. Oversee management of the Lab's Quality Assurance Program.
- Oversee management of the City's Wastewater Pretreatment and Fat, Rags, Oil, and Grease Programs.
- Manage the development and implementation of objectives, policies, and procedures. Develop and oversee strategies to align the Environmental Lab with the City's strategic priorities. Oversee and manage purchasing and the lab's annual budget.
Experience and Education Guidelines: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:
Experience : A minimum of eight (8) years progressive experience in assigned functional area and five (5) years management experience managing a work group in a laboratory setting.
Education : Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or environmental science. Master's degree is preferred.
Licenses and Certificates : Possession of a Class IV Laboratory Technician Certification within 24 months, as it relates to the functional area. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Driver's License.

Supervises: Laboratory Supervisor, Lab QAO, Environmental Compliance Manager, Specialty Chemist
