Seasonal Solid Waste Laborer - No Driver's License Required

The City of Olathe's Solid Waste Division is currently hiring for Seasonal Laborers to help with manual collection of yard waste, recycling or trash. We always have a need for laborers to assist drivers operating our rear-loader collection vehicles. Full-time benefited positions may become available to qualified laborer staff.

What do our Solid Waste Laborers do?

• Ride on the back of a yard waste truck, collecting yard waste on a designated route.
• Manually load yard waste in trucks. Yard waste may be in carts, bags, or bundled.
• Direct driver when pulling out in traffic and backing up; direct incoming vehicles to dumping area at disposal facility.
• Interact with residents in a friendly, helpful way.
• Assist in preparing vehicle for daily operations, cleaning vehicle.
• Assist driver as needed.
• May help with Recycle routes.

What is the work schedule?

• Work Monday through Friday
• Start time: 6:30 AM
• End time: Varies daily. There is often overtime required with little notice.
• Many opportunities for overtime.
• You will be required to work Saturday, December 31st and Saturday, January 7th.

What does "guaranteed 40 hours" mean?

• If report to work on time all 5 days of the week, work each day until all routes are completed, and you put in less than 40 hours, we will pay you the full 40 hours.

What is this job really like?

• It's hard work, but it can be fun.
• It is very physically demanding.
• You're going to get dirty.
• You WON'T have to go to the gym. You'll get your workout here.
• You will be working outside in the heat, rain, wind, cold, and all other weather conditions.
• You'll be teamed up with a Collection Operator (driver) who will partner with you to pick up all yard waste that is left at the curbs on your route.
• You may help out one of our Recycle drivers especially in December and January.
• We work all holidays except Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.
• Kids and residents love to wave at our Solid Waste teams as they drive through the neighborhoods. We love it if you wave back.

What's so physically demanding?

• You'll need the arm and leg strength to hold on safely to the back of a moving vehicle.
• You'll be climbing up and down getting on and off/in and out of the truck all day long.
• You'll walk back and forth between the curb and the back of the truck at every house you stop at.
• You'll be lifting bags of leaves, grass, and other yard waste. This could be damp or wet and is heavy.

What about part-time opportunities?

• If you're available for a full day, but not every day, we can work with that.
• Let us know what days you can commit to and that will be your work schedule.
• For example, you go to school on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We'd love to have you work for us on Tuesday and Thursday each week.

If selected for a position, you must:

• Be 18 years of age or older
• Be able to work an entire shift in any and all weather conditions
• Successfully pass:
  • Criminal Background Check
  • Drug Screen
  • Physical
  • Agility Screening

These positions are Seasonal and will last no more than six months.
